How to prepare for a DEXA bone density scan

A DEXA scan uses low-dose X-rays to assess bone mineral density, commonly at the hip and spine. You remain awake and lie still while the scanner passes over the body area being assessed. The examination is generally brief, and the imaging team may ask you to hold a position so the pictures are clear.

Follow the appointment instructions from your imaging centre. Choose comfortable clothes without metal fasteners, belts, or thick decorations, and leave jewellery and other removable metal items at home if possible. Tell the team if you might be pregnant, have recently had a contrast study, or cannot lie flat comfortably. Take regular medicines unless your clinician or the imaging centre gives different instructions. Bring relevant previous scan reports if you have them.

Contact the imaging centre before attending if you may be pregnant, recently received contrast material, or need help transferring or remaining still. After the scan, seek medical advice for a new problem that is unrelated to the usual brief appointment experience, such as significant pain or feeling unwell. A DEXA scan itself does not explain every cause of bone pain, so discuss persistent symptoms with a clinician.

Ask which bones will be measured, whether you should change any medicines, when the report will be available, and how the result will guide your care. You can also ask why the scan was recommended and whether a related condition, such as premature ovarian insufficiency, affects bone health.
