What should you know about pregnant lady constipation?

Short answer
Pregnancy constipation is common because hormones, pressure and supplements can slow the bowel, but severe or persistent symptoms need review.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.
At a glance
- Helpful habits
- Fluids, gradual fibre, movement and a regular toilet routine
- Check medicines
- Iron and laxatives should be reviewed for pregnancy suitability
Why it happens
Pregnancy hormones can slow movement through the bowel, while the growing uterus may add pressure. Nausea, reduced activity, a change in diet, low fluid intake and iron supplements can make stools harder or less frequent. Constipation may mean straining, hard stools, bloating or a feeling that the bowel has not emptied.
Dehydration, hypothyroidism, irritable bowel syndrome or diverticular disease may also affect bowel symptoms. Constipation does not by itself identify one of these conditions. A clinician will consider pain, vomiting, blood, bowel habits, medicines and how long the change has lasted.
Safe ways to help
Drink fluids regularly, add fibre gradually through vegetables, fruit, beans and whole grains, and take gentle daily movement if your pregnancy team allows it. Respond to the urge to open your bowels and use a footstool to raise your knees comfortably. Ask before using a laxative, changing iron, or taking a fibre product; some options are unsuitable in pregnancy.
When to seek care
Arrange advice if constipation is not improving, keeps returning, or is interfering with eating and daily activities. Seek urgent care for severe or persistent abdominal pain, repeated vomiting, a swollen hard abdomen, inability to pass gas, black or bloody stools, fever, fainting or heavy rectal bleeding. These features need assessment rather than repeated self-treatment.
Questions for your doctor
Ask whether your prenatal iron is contributing, which bowel medicine is appropriate, and whether your symptoms warrant thyroid or other checks. Mention your usual bowel pattern, stool consistency, fluid intake, pain and any blood.
