Pregnancy tiredness in the third trimester

Short answer
Late-pregnancy tiredness often reflects disrupted sleep and increased physical demands, yet a pronounced change should be discussed with your care team.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.
At a glance
- Common contributors
- Interrupted sleep, physical effort, discomfort and frequent urination
- Check with your clinician
- A pronounced, persistent or suddenly worsening change in energy
What may be behind it
As pregnancy advances, finding a comfortable sleeping position, managing back discomfort and waking to urinate can make restorative sleep difficult. Carrying extra weight also makes routine activities more tiring. Tiredness itself does not identify one condition. Anaemia, dehydration, infection, low mood, thyroid problems and nutritional conditions such as coeliac disease can present with fatigue, so the wider pattern matters.
Build in recovery
Break chores into smaller tasks and schedule pauses before you feel depleted. A gentle daytime walk or pregnancy-approved exercise may support sleep, circulation and mood; stop if you feel unwell. Keep meals regular, include protein and iron-containing foods, and drink regularly. Protect a wind-down period before bed and ask for help with childcare or heavy work. Continue prescribed antenatal supplements unless your clinician advises a change.
Reasons to contact your care team
Seek urgent help for severe breathlessness, chest pain, fainting, confusion, a high fever, inability to keep fluids down or a major reduction in urination. Tell your maternity team promptly about fatigue with palpitations, marked dizziness, unusual paleness, severe headache or feeling suddenly much worse. Speak to a clinician about low mood, loss of interest or thoughts of self-harm; immediate support is available for a mental-health emergency.

Questions people ask
Can gentle exercise help third-trimester tiredness?
For many pregnant people, comfortable gentle activity can support sleep and mood, but ask your maternity clinician what is appropriate for your pregnancy.
Could tiredness be linked to anaemia?
Yes, anaemia can cause fatigue and other symptoms such as dizziness or paleness. A clinician can decide whether assessment or blood tests are needed.
