Short answer

Pregnancy tiredness in the third trimester is common because your body is supporting a growing baby, carrying more weight, and often sleeping less, but severe or worsening fatigue deserves a check-up.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

What late-pregnancy tiredness can mean

Energy may fall as your abdomen becomes heavier, movement takes more effort, and back discomfort, heartburn, leg cramps, or frequent urination interrupts sleep. Emotional strain and the practical demands of preparing for birth can add to the load.

Fatigue can also occur with anaemia, especially when it comes with breathlessness on ordinary activity, dizziness, paleness, headaches, or a fast heartbeat. A clinician may assess your symptoms and arrange blood tests rather than assuming tiredness is simply part of pregnancy. Other illnesses can cause fatigue too, including dehydration, COVID-19, coeliac disease, or a kidney problem; tiredness alone does not identify any one condition.

Practical ways to protect your energy

Rest when you can and share tasks that leave you depleted. Keep a regular sleep routine, use pillows to support your side-lying position, and ask your maternity team which sleeping position is suitable for you. Gentle movement, such as an easy walk, may support sleep and comfort if your pregnancy team has said activity is appropriate.

Eat regular, varied meals and drink fluids through the day. Take only supplements or medicines recommended by your maternity clinician; do not start iron treatment just because you feel tired. Note when the fatigue began, how it affects daily activities, and any associated symptoms so your appointment is more useful.

When to seek care

Contact your maternity team or doctor promptly if fatigue is suddenly much worse, stops you managing basic activities, or is accompanied by breathlessness at rest, chest pain, fainting, a severe headache, vision changes, marked swelling, fever, persistent vomiting, or reduced baby movements. Seek urgent help for severe breathing difficulty, collapse, or chest pain.

Arrange a routine review if tiredness persists despite rest, or if you have dizziness, palpitations, unusual thirst, dark urine, diarrhoea, weight loss, low mood, or symptoms of infection. These details can help your clinician decide whether you need an examination, urine testing, or blood tests.

Questions for your doctor or midwife

Ask whether your symptoms fit expected third-trimester changes, whether your recent blood count needs review, and which activities are safe for you. You can also ask how to manage sleep disruption, when reduced energy should be reported, and whether any medicine or supplement could be contributing.

Questions people ask

Is it normal to feel very tired in the third trimester?

Some tiredness is common late in pregnancy, but exhaustion that is severe, new, worsening, or disabling should be discussed with your maternity team.

Could anaemia be causing pregnancy fatigue?

Anaemia can cause fatigue and may also cause dizziness, paleness, headaches, breathlessness, or a fast heartbeat. Your clinician can assess this with your symptoms and, when appropriate, blood tests.

What can I do today to cope with low energy?

Prioritise rest, share demanding tasks, eat regular meals, drink fluids, and use gentle movement only if your maternity team considers it suitable for you.
