Pregnancy-time constipation remedies: what helps

Short answer
During pregnancy, gentle movement, adequate fluids, fibre-rich foods and clinician-approved medicines can ease constipation safely.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.
At a glance
- Common contributors
- Hormonal bowel slowing, lower activity, iron supplements and low fluid intake
- First steps
- Fluids, gradual fibre, movement and a regular toilet routine
Why constipation can happen
Pregnancy hormones can slow the bowel, while the growing uterus may change how the bowel moves. Iron in some prenatal supplements can also make stools harder or less frequent. Constipation may mean hard, dry stools, straining, or a feeling that the bowel has not emptied fully. It is a symptom, not proof of another condition; persistent symptoms can also occur with dehydration, hypothyroidism or irritable bowel syndrome.
Measures to try
Sip fluids regularly unless your maternity clinician has restricted them. Add fibre gradually through vegetables, fruit, beans, lentils, oats and whole grains, and keep moving with pregnancy-appropriate walking or other activity. Respond to the urge to open your bowels and use a small footstool to support a comfortable position. Do not stop prescribed iron without advice. If food and movement do not help, ask a pharmacist, midwife or doctor which stool-softening or fibre product is suitable in pregnancy; avoid starting herbal remedies or laxatives without guidance.
When to seek medical help
Contact your maternity team promptly for severe or worsening abdominal pain, repeated vomiting, a swollen or rigid abdomen, blood in the stool, fever, or inability to pass stool and gas. Arrange a review if constipation continues despite self-care, repeatedly returns, or begins after a medicine change. Urgent assessment is appropriate when bowel symptoms occur with fainting, marked weakness or signs of dehydration such as very dark urine and dizziness.
Questions for your clinician
Could my prenatal iron be contributing, and can the formulation or timing be adjusted? Which fibre supplement or stool softener is appropriate for my stage of pregnancy? How much fluid and activity are suitable for me? Could another condition or medicine be contributing?

Questions people ask
Can I take a laxative while pregnant?
Some products may be suitable, but the choice depends on your symptoms, medicines and pregnancy stage. Check with a pharmacist, midwife or doctor first.
Should I stop prenatal vitamins if they cause constipation?
Do not stop them on your own. Ask your clinician whether the iron product, dose or schedule can be changed while maintaining pregnancy care.
