Pregnancy symptoms while on Nexplanon

Nexplanon is a contraceptive implant that releases etonogestrel. It can change bleeding patterns and may cause symptoms such as breast tenderness, nausea or headaches, which can overlap with early pregnancy symptoms. No contraceptive method removes the need to assess a new pregnancy possibility. Pregnancy with an implant is uncommon, but pain or bleeding alongside a positive test needs prompt review because an ectopic pregnancy must be considered.

Take a home pregnancy test according to its instructions if your symptoms are new, your bleeding pattern has changed in an unusual way, or pregnancy is possible. Contact a clinician with the result, the date your implant was placed and any medicines you take. Do not remove the implant yourself. A clinician can check that the rod is present, review medicines that may reduce contraceptive protection, and discuss options such as a hormonal coil if your needs have changed.

Seek urgent help for severe or one-sided lower abdominal pain, shoulder-tip pain, fainting, marked dizziness, heavy bleeding or feeling seriously unwell, particularly after a positive pregnancy test. Contact a clinician promptly for a positive test even if symptoms are mild, so the pregnancy location and implant plan can be assessed.

Ask whether your symptoms could be implant effects, whether you need repeat testing or an ultrasound, whether any medicine affects the implant, and what contraception is suitable during the assessment.
