Pregnancy-safe reflux medication: what to know

Pregnancy hormones can relax the valve between the food pipe and stomach, while the growing womb can increase pressure inside the abdomen. This may cause burning behind the breastbone, a sour taste, burping, or symptoms that worsen after meals or when lying down. Reflux can also disturb sleep and may be associated with a cough; reflux symptoms do not by themselves prove another condition.

A clinician may first suggest practical measures and then consider an antacid or another pregnancy-suitable medicine. Some products contain ingredients that are unsuitable for particular people, and medicines can interact with iron or other supplements.

Try smaller meals, remain upright after eating, and avoid lying down soon after food. Raising the head of the bed can help night symptoms; extra pillows may bend the body in a way that is less helpful. Notice whether rich, spicy, acidic, or late meals trigger discomfort, and discuss alternatives before removing nutritious foods.

Do not start, stop, or combine reflux medicines without checking with your maternity team, pharmacist, or doctor. Tell them about prenatal vitamins, iron, herbal products, and medicines for other conditions. Ask how far apart to take an antacid from supplements if one is recommended.

Arrange prompt medical advice for reflux that is persistent, worsening, or not controlled by the plan you were given, especially if swallowing becomes difficult or painful, vomiting continues, or you cannot keep fluids down. Seek urgent help for severe chest pain, chest tightness, breathlessness, vomiting blood, or black stools, because these symptoms need assessment rather than self-treatment.

Ask which medicine and dose fit your pregnancy, whether it should be taken before meals or at bedtime, and how it should be separated from iron. Ask what symptoms would mean you should contact the maternity team and whether another cause should be considered.
