Pregnancy and left leg swelling
Updated

Short answer
Pregnancy left leg swelling can be mild, but sudden one-sided swelling, pain, warmth, or breathlessness needs prompt medical assessment.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

What one-sided swelling can mean
Pregnancy can slow blood return from the legs as the uterus grows, and standing or sitting for long periods can increase ankle and leg swelling. Visible veins, previous vein problems, or pressure on local tissues may also contribute. Swelling limited to one leg is different from the mild swelling that often affects both feet, so its timing, speed of change, pain, colour, and warmth matter. A swollen ankle symptom does not identify one diagnosis on its own.
What to do now
Note when the swelling began and whether it is increasing. Rest with the leg supported, avoid long periods in one position, and move the ankles gently if your maternity team says this is suitable. Wear comfortable footwear and avoid tight bands around the leg. Do not massage a newly swollen, painful leg or begin compression garments without clinical advice, because the cause should be checked first.
When to seek urgent care
Contact your maternity team promptly for new one-sided swelling, calf or thigh pain, warmth, redness, or tenderness. Seek emergency help for sudden breathlessness, chest pain, coughing blood, fainting, or a racing heartbeat. Also report swelling with severe headache, vision changes, upper abdominal pain, or a sudden rise in swelling, since pregnancy-related complications may need urgent review.
Questions for your clinician
Does this pattern need examination or an ultrasound? Should I change activity or use compression? Which symptoms mean I should go straight to emergency care?

Questions people ask
Is left leg swelling always dangerous in pregnancy?
No. Pregnancy-related pressure and prolonged standing can cause swelling, but new one-sided changes should be assessed because appearance alone cannot identify the cause.
Can I rub the swollen leg?
Avoid massaging a newly swollen or painful leg until a clinician has advised you, particularly when the change is sudden.
