When does pregnancy fatigue start?

Short answer
Pregnancy fatigue can begin early, sometimes before a missed period, and may ease or return as pregnancy progresses.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.
At a glance
- Possible onset
- Fatigue may appear early in pregnancy.
- Pattern
- Energy can improve, stay low or fluctuate.
Why tiredness changes
Early pregnancy hormonal shifts, nausea and the body’s adjustment to pregnancy can cause marked sleepiness. Some people feel more energetic later, while others remain tired or notice it again as sleep becomes less comfortable. Fatigue varies between pregnancies, so its timing cannot confirm pregnancy or indicate how pregnancy is developing. Anaemia, dehydration, infection, poor sleep and emotional stress can create a similar experience.
How to respond
Keep a simple record of sleep, meals, fluids, activity and accompanying symptoms for a few days. Rest when possible, reduce non-essential demands, and use gentle activity if it leaves you feeling better rather than depleted. Eat regular balanced meals and take only pregnancy-approved medicines or supplements. Mention ongoing tiredness at your next antenatal appointment, particularly if it is limiting work, childcare or personal care.
When to seek care
Contact your maternity team or doctor sooner if fatigue suddenly becomes much worse, persists despite rest, or is paired with dizziness, fainting, breathlessness, a racing heartbeat, fever, vomiting that prevents fluids, bleeding or low mood. Urgent assessment is needed for collapse, severe breathing trouble, confusion, severe pain or heavy bleeding. A clinician can check for anaemia or another cause rather than assuming pregnancy alone explains the symptom.
Questions for your doctor
Does the timing and severity of my fatigue suggest any checks? Could anaemia, dehydration or a sleep problem be involved? How can I pace work and activity safely?

Questions people ask
Does early fatigue prove that I am pregnant?
No. Tiredness has many causes, so use an appropriate pregnancy test and clinical advice rather than fatigue alone.
When should I mention pregnancy fatigue?
Bring it up at antenatal care, or sooner if it is severe, worsening or accompanied by faintness, breathlessness, fever or bleeding.
