Pregnancy after salpingectomy: what to know

A salpingectomy removes one or both fallopian tubes. If one tube remains and is healthy, natural conception may still be possible; if both tubes were removed, assisted conception may be discussed because sperm and egg cannot meet through the usual route.

The reason for surgery matters. A tube removed after an ectopic pregnancy means your clinician may want to confirm the location of a future pregnancy early. An Ectopic Pregnancy develops outside the main cavity of the uterus and needs prompt medical care.

Ask for a review of the operation report, the condition of the remaining tube and any fertility concerns before trying to conceive. Review medicines and health conditions, and contact your maternity or gynaecology team soon after a positive test.

Your clinician may arrange blood tests and an early scan to check that the pregnancy is developing in the uterus. The original Salpingectomy may have been performed through keyhole surgery; a Laparoscopic Surgery System is used by surgeons to support some minimally invasive procedures.

Seek urgent help for one-sided pelvic or abdominal pain, shoulder-tip pain, vaginal bleeding, dizziness, fainting or sudden weakness after a positive pregnancy test. These symptoms need assessment because an ectopic pregnancy can become dangerous without prompt treatment.

Ask whether one or both tubes were removed, when to arrange an early scan, what symptoms require emergency care, and whether a fertility referral is appropriate for your circumstances.
