Pregnancy after miscarriage: what to know

Bleeding and cramping usually settle as the uterus recovers. Emotional recovery may take longer, and feelings can change from day to day. A previous miscarriage does not by itself determine what will happen in a later pregnancy.

Your clinician may review the pregnancy history, ongoing symptoms, medicines and any health conditions before you try again. A pregnancy test can remain positive for a while after a loss, so an early scan or blood tests may be used when clinically appropriate.

Wait until bleeding and significant pain have settled, and use contraception if you do not wish to conceive immediately. Start or continue folic acid as advised, review long-term medicines, and arrange early antenatal care after a positive test.

Tell the maternity team about the miscarriage and ask what early monitoring is suitable. A Transvaginal Ultrasound may help assess an early pregnancy when your clinician recommends it. If treatment for the previous loss is still being completed, ask about Medical Management of Miscarriage or Surgical Management of Miscarriage.

Seek urgent medical help for heavy or worsening bleeding, severe or one-sided abdominal pain, fainting, dizziness, fever, or feeling suddenly very unwell. Contact your maternity team promptly for pain or bleeding in a new pregnancy, even if symptoms seem mild.
