What should you know about potency of topical corticosteroids?

Potency is not the same as the amount applied or the brand name. A stronger steroid may be useful for thick, inflamed skin on a limb, while thin skin on the face, eyelids, groin, or skin folds often needs a milder option and closer supervision. The diagnosis matters too: Atopic Dermatitis, Contact Dermatitis, Heat Rash, Lichen Planus, and other rashes may need different strengths or non-steroid treatment.

Apply a thin layer only to affected skin and follow the prescribed schedule. Wash hands afterward unless the hands are the treatment site, and avoid covering the area with airtight dressings unless instructed. Do not share a tube, use a stronger product for a longer period because a rash persists, or apply it to an undiagnosed infection. Your clinician may use short treatment bursts, step down to a milder product, or pair treatment with moisturiser.

Contact a clinician if the rash spreads, becomes painful, oozes, develops yellow crusting, or fails to improve as expected. Seek prompt advice for new acne-like bumps, marked skin thinning, easy bruising, colour change, blurred vision after use near the eyes, or symptoms after applying a large area. A Drug Rash or infection may need a different approach.

Ask which potency you have, where it may be applied, how often and for how long, what to do if a dose is missed, and how to taper or stop if the condition keeps recurring.
