What should you know about postseptal orbital cellulitis?

The infection affects tissues behind the orbital septum, the boundary around the eye socket. Swelling and inflammation can limit eye movement, raise pressure around the eye, and threaten vision or spread toward the brain. It may follow a sinus infection, nearby skin infection, injury, or surgery. Unlike uncomplicated Cellulitis of the skin, the deeper location makes home observation unsafe.

Go to an emergency department immediately if postseptal orbital cellulitis is suspected. Assessment may include an eye examination, blood tests, and imaging, followed by antibiotics through a vein. An ophthalmology or ear, nose, and throat team may be involved, and surgery can be needed if an abscess or pressure problem develops. Do not press on the eyelid, delay care for home remedies, or use leftover antibiotics.

Urgent warning signs include painful or restricted eye movement, reduced or double vision, a bulging eye, marked eyelid swelling, severe headache, vomiting, confusion, or Fever. Rapid deterioration, faintness, breathing difficulty, or extreme weakness may signal Sepsis and requires emergency help. People with Type 2 Diabetes or impaired immunity should treat facial and eye infections as especially urgent.

Ask where the infection is located, whether imaging shows a collection, which organisms are being covered, how vision will be monitored, and what symptoms should trigger immediate review after discharge.
