Postpartum vulvar itching after a C-section: what to know

A caesarean does not prevent vulvar symptoms. Sweat, pads, antiseptic products, shaving, tight clothing and contact with urine can irritate sensitive skin. Hormonal changes after birth may also cause dryness. Thrush can cause marked itching with soreness or a thick discharge, while bacterial or other infections may cause an unusual smell, pain or discharge. Itching near the abdominal incision is a different concern and may relate to skin healing, adhesive or a dressing reaction.

Rinse gently with lukewarm water, pat dry, and change damp pads or underwear promptly. Choose loose cotton underwear and avoid scented washes, deodorants, douching and non-prescribed creams. Do not scratch broken skin. Arrange a postnatal review if symptoms continue, recur, or come with discharge, burning or pain; an examination can distinguish skin irritation from infection. Seek urgent medical help for fever, rapidly increasing swelling, severe vulvar pain, pus, heavy bleeding, feeling faint, or redness and worsening pain around the incision. Seek prompt assessment for foul-smelling discharge, painful urination, blisters or sores. These features need examination rather than home treatment.
