What should you know about postpartum mastitis treatment?

Postpartum mastitis treatment focuses on reducing breast inflammation, keeping milk removal comfortable and checking for infection or an abscess. Early advice can prevent symptoms from becoming harder to manage.

Mastitis is inflammation in breast tissue. A tender, warm or swollen area may occur with a firm patch, burning pain or flu-like symptoms. It can happen during breastfeeding, especially when milk removal is difficult, feeds are missed, the baby has a shallow latch or pressure is placed on the breast.

Breast pain and painful breastfeeding can have several causes, so a clinician may ask about feeding, inspect the breast and check your temperature. A collection of infected fluid, called an abscess, may need drainage rather than home care alone.

Continue breastfeeding or expressing only as much as needed for comfort, unless your clinician advises otherwise. Use a comfortable position, avoid forceful massage and choose a supportive bra that does not compress the breast. Cool packs between feeds may ease swelling; rest, fluids and suitable pain relief can support recovery.

A lactation consultation can assess latch, positioning and pumping technique. If bacterial infection is suspected, a clinician may prescribe an antibiotic and explain how to take it while feeding. Do not start leftover antibiotics or stop a prescribed course without advice.

Arrange prompt medical assessment if you feel feverish, shivery or very unwell, if redness is spreading, pain is worsening, or symptoms are not improving with supportive measures. Seek urgent help for faintness, confusion, breathing difficulty or rapidly worsening illness.

A persistent lump, soft fluid-filled area or ongoing discharge needs review because an abscess may require treatment. Breast pain that keeps returning also deserves assessment rather than repeated self-treatment.

Ask whether your symptoms fit mastitis, whether you should continue feeding from the affected side, which pain relief is suitable, how to recognise an abscess and when you should expect improvement. Ask for feeding support if latch or pumping is contributing to pain.
