Postpartum heart failure symptoms

Heart failure means the heart is not circulating blood efficiently enough for the body's needs. After birth, warning symptoms may include breathlessness during ordinary activity or while lying flat, waking short of breath, a persistent cough, rapid weight change from fluid, swollen ankles, marked fatigue or a racing and irregular heartbeat. The condition presents with these symptoms; a symptom alone does not establish the diagnosis.

Arrange prompt medical review if these symptoms are new, worsening or appearing together. A clinician may check your blood pressure, heart rate, oxygen level, lungs and heart, then arrange tests such as an electrocardiogram, blood tests or heart imaging. Bring a list of medicines and note when symptoms occur, including whether lying down makes breathing harder.

Call emergency services for severe breathlessness, blue or grey lips, chest pressure, collapse, confusion, coughing pink froth or a fast heartbeat with weakness. Do not drive yourself if you feel faint or cannot breathe comfortably. Swollen ankles or fatigue with breathlessness also warrant same-day advice.

Ask what tests are needed, whether medicines are compatible with breastfeeding, how much activity is safe, and which symptoms mean you should return immediately.
