Short answer

After a miscarriage, the body may need time to recover from pregnancy changes while emotions and bleeding gradually settle.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

The short answer

After a miscarriage, the body may need time to recover from pregnancy changes while emotions and bleeding gradually settle. Recovery differs according to how far the pregnancy had progressed and whether the miscarriage passed naturally or needed medicine or a procedure.

What recovery can involve

Vaginal bleeding and period-like cramps can occur as the uterus empties and returns towards its usual size. Tiredness, breast tenderness or milk production may also continue briefly after pregnancy hormone levels begin to fall. Grief can appear as sadness, anger, numbness, guilt or anxiety, and these feelings can affect partners too.

A clinician may arrange an assessment to check whether pregnancy tissue remains and whether the uterus is recovering. A transvaginal ultrasound can help with this assessment. The options for completing a miscarriage include waiting, medical management or surgical management, depending on symptoms, examination findings and your preferences.

Practical steps after a miscarriage

Rest when you need to, drink fluids and use sanitary pads while bleeding so you can observe changes. Take only pain relief that your clinician says is suitable for you. Follow any instructions about medicines, follow-up testing and avoiding intercourse or inserting anything into the vagina while bleeding.

Give yourself permission to recover emotionally as well as physically. A trusted person, counsellor or pregnancy-loss support service can provide space to talk. Ask when it is medically appropriate to resume usual activity and when you can discuss a future pregnancy.

When to seek urgent care

Seek urgent medical help for heavy or rapidly increasing bleeding, severe or one-sided abdominal pain, fainting, dizziness, shoulder-tip pain, fever, chills or unpleasant-smelling discharge. These symptoms can signal significant blood loss, infection or a pregnancy-related emergency and should not be assessed at home.

Contact your maternity or gynaecology team if bleeding or pain is not improving, or if grief, panic or low mood is making daily life difficult. Immediate help is needed if you may harm yourself.

Questions for your doctor

Ask what caused the bleeding, whether follow-up is needed, which warning signs apply to you, how long to avoid strenuous activity, and when contraception, sex or another pregnancy can be considered. You can also ask about emotional support and whether an ultrasound or treatment is recommended.
