What should you know about post viral labyrinthitis?

Labyrinthitis affects the inner-ear structures involved in balance and, in some cases, hearing. Symptoms may start suddenly after a respiratory infection such as a common cold. Vertigo can feel like spinning, while dizziness may feel like unsteadiness or light-headedness. Ringing in the ears or reduced hearing can occur, particularly when hearing pathways are involved. Similar symptoms can have other causes, so a clinician may need to examine your ears, nerves, eye movements, balance, and hearing.

Sit or lie down when spinning begins, rise slowly, and clear loose rugs or clutter from walking areas. Avoid driving, heights, swimming alone, and machinery until balance and alertness have returned. Drink fluids if nausea allows and take medicines only as advised. Once a clinician says it is safe, gentle head and walking movements can help the balance system adapt; prolonged bed rest may slow that adjustment.

Seek emergency help for sudden weakness, facial drooping, trouble speaking, new severe headache, fainting, chest pain, or inability to walk safely. Get prompt assessment for sudden hearing loss, persistent vomiting, severe headache, or symptoms that are rapidly worsening. Arrange a GP consultation when vertigo, dizziness, or ear symptoms continue, recur, or interfere with work and daily activities.
