What should you know about post viral cough?

A viral infection can leave the breathing tubes sensitive, so cold air, talking, exercise, or throat secretions may trigger coughing. A dry cough is common, although mucus can remain. The original illness may have been a common cold or acute bronchitis. Ongoing cough can also reflect asthma, allergic rhinitis, acid reflux, or another airway condition, so the pattern and examination matter. A cough that is changing, worsening, or not settling should not automatically be attributed to the earlier virus.

Drink fluids, avoid smoke and strong fragrances, and use humidified air if it feels soothing. Honey in a warm drink may calm throat irritation for adults and children over one year. Rest when needed, but return to ordinary activity gradually. Do not start antibiotics or combine cough medicines without checking that they are suitable for you; antibiotics do not treat viral illness. A clinician may assess breathing, listen to your chest, and tailor treatment if asthma, reflux, or another cause is suspected.

Seek prompt medical care for breathlessness, chest pain, coughing blood, bluish lips, confusion, fainting, or a high or returning fever. Arrange an appointment if the cough is severe, disrupts sleep, limits activity, or continues without improvement. Children, older adults, pregnant people, and anyone with lung or immune problems may need earlier advice.
