What should you know about post vertebroplasty?

Vertebroplasty places Bone Cement into a weakened vertebra, often one affected by a Vertebral Compression Fracture. The treated area may feel sore at the needle site, and movement can be limited briefly. Pain improvement varies, and the original spinal problem may still need treatment. A cement procedure does not by itself rebuild overall bone strength, so your clinician may discuss bone health, fall prevention, and safe strengthening after the procedure.

Keep the puncture area clean and follow the dressing instructions. Use medicines only as directed, avoid strenuous lifting and repeated bending until cleared, and change positions gently. Walk as recommended rather than staying in bed for long periods. Increase activity in stages, with attention to pain and balance. Ask when physiotherapy or exercises should begin. Kyphoplasty is another spine procedure your clinician may discuss, but suitability depends on the fracture and your health.

Seek urgent care for new leg weakness, numbness spreading down a limb, loss of bladder or bowel control, severe escalating back pain, chest pain, or breathing difficulty. Contact the treating team for fever, increasing redness or drainage at the puncture site, persistent vomiting, or pain that is not controlled by the prescribed plan. A fall or new pain in another part of the spine also deserves prompt advice.

Ask what lifting and bending limits apply, when walking and bathing are safe, how the fracture will be followed, whether bone-strength treatment is needed, and which symptoms mean emergency review.
