What recovery can feel like
Gastroenteritis can leave you tired after vomiting or diarrhoea has eased. Nausea, abdominal pain, fever and loss of appetite may fade at different speeds. The main concern after fluid loss is dehydration, which can cause a dry mouth, dark urine, dizziness or unusual weakness. A viral illness such as rotavirus infection can spread easily, so careful handwashing and avoiding food preparation for others while unwell can reduce transmission.
Steps that support recovery
Take frequent small sips of water or an oral rehydration drink. If vomiting returns, pause briefly and restart with tiny amounts. When hunger returns, choose simple foods and increase variety as tolerated; you do not need to force a full meal. Rest, wash hands with soap and water, and clean shared bathroom surfaces. Avoid alcohol until you are eating and drinking normally. A pharmacist or GP can advise about persistent diarrhoea, nausea or medicines that may irritate your stomach.
When to get medical help
Seek urgent medical help for confusion, fainting, severe weakness, severe abdominal pain, blood in vomit or stool, or inability to keep fluids down. Arrange a GP assessment if dehydration symptoms continue, fever is persistent, diarrhoea is prolonged, or recovery is not progressing. Babies, older adults, pregnant people and those with long-term conditions may need earlier advice.
Questions for your doctor
Could another illness explain my ongoing symptoms? How can I tell whether I am replacing enough fluid? When can I return to normal meals, work or exercise? Do any of my medicines need review while my stomach is unsettled?
