Short answer

Depression after miscarriage can cause persistent low mood, numbness, guilt, sleep changes or loss of interest, and deserves compassionate support.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

At a glance

Can happen
Low mood, guilt, numbness and sleep changes may follow pregnancy loss.
Support
Counselling, practical help and medical review can all be useful.
Urgent concern
Thoughts of self-harm or losing touch with reality need immediate help.

What these feelings can mean

Grief and depression can overlap after pregnancy loss. You may feel tearful, irritable, detached, anxious or unable to concentrate. Physical recovery, disrupted sleep and changes in pregnancy hormones can add strain. Feeling relief, anger or sadness does not make you uncaring, and there is no single timetable for grieving.

If low mood continues, interferes with eating, sleeping, work or relationships, or feels increasingly heavy, a clinician can assess depression and other concerns. A review may also consider ongoing bleeding, pain or pregnancy tissue that has not passed. A Transvaginal Ultrasound may help assess what is happening in the uterus.

What may help now

Tell one trusted person plainly that you are struggling, and accept practical help with meals, childcare or appointments. Keep a gentle routine: drink fluids, eat when you can, rest, and take short walks if your body allows. A GP, obstetric clinician or mental health professional can discuss counselling and, when appropriate, medication. Do not stop prescribed medicine without advice.

If physical symptoms need treatment, ask which option fits your situation: Medical Management of Miscarriage or Surgical Management of Miscarriage may be discussed after assessment.

When to seek care

Seek urgent help now if you might harm yourself, cannot stay safe, feel detached from reality, or hear or see things others do not. Contact emergency services or go to an emergency department, and ask someone to stay with you. Seek prompt medical care for heavy bleeding, severe pain, fever, fainting or worsening weakness after miscarriage.

Questions for your doctor

Could this be depression, grief, anxiety or a combination? What support is available today? Do I need a physical examination or ultrasound? Which treatments are compatible with breastfeeding or a future pregnancy? What warning signs should my support person watch for?

Questions people ask

Is depression after miscarriage the same as grief?

They can overlap. Depression is more concerning when symptoms persist or disrupt daily life, and a clinician can help distinguish them.

When should I ask for help?

Ask for help when low mood, anxiety, guilt or loss of interest feels hard to manage, and seek emergency help for immediate safety concerns.
