Short answer

After kyphoplasty, follow your discharge instructions, increase activity gradually, and watch for new or worsening symptoms.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

At a glance

Procedure
Kyphoplasty uses bone cement to support a fractured vertebra.
Activity
Increase movement gradually and follow your clinician’s lifting guidance.
Urgent warning signs
New weakness, numbness, walking difficulty, or bladder and bowel changes need urgent help.

The short answer

Kyphoplasty strengthens a fractured vertebra by placing bone cement into the collapsed area, often after a small balloon creates a cavity. The procedure may ease pain related to a vertebral compression fracture, but the treated bone still needs time and sensible movement while you recover.

What recovery can mean

Some people can walk soon after the procedure, while tiredness or soreness around the access site may linger. Your clinician will tell you when to shower, drive, return to work, and resume lifting. Avoid bending, twisting, or heavy lifting until you have clear guidance; these movements can strain the healing spine or worsen pain.

Pain that was caused by the fracture may improve, but kyphoplasty does not treat every source of back pain. Bone health also matters because weakened vertebrae can fracture again. Ask whether you need an osteoporosis assessment, medication review, nutrition advice, or a physiotherapy plan.

What to do at home

Take medicines exactly as directed, keep the wound clean according to your discharge advice, and use the recommended walking or exercise plan. Change position regularly rather than staying in bed for long periods. Use support when standing if you feel unsteady, and keep pathways clear to reduce falls.

Keep follow-up appointments even if your pain is better. Contact the treating team about pain that is not settling, medication side effects, wound changes, or uncertainty about an activity. Bring a list of medicines and any new symptoms to the visit.

When to seek care

Seek urgent medical help for new weakness, numbness, trouble walking, loss of bladder or bowel control, chest pain, or difficulty breathing. These symptoms can signal a serious problem and should not be watched at home.

Contact your surgical team promptly for fever, increasing redness or drainage at the wound, severe or escalating back pain, or pain that spreads into an arm or leg. Use the emergency service if symptoms are sudden, severe, or accompanied by fainting or marked weakness.

Questions for your doctor

Ask: Which activities and lifting limits apply to me? When should I start physiotherapy? How should I care for the wound? Which symptoms require an emergency call? Do I need a plan to reduce the chance of another vertebral compression fracture?
