What should you know about portable pico lasers?

Picosecond lasers release energy in extremely brief pulses. The pulse can create a photoacoustic effect that breaks pigment into smaller particles, reducing the amount of heat delivered to nearby tissue compared with some longer pulses. The result depends on the pigment, its depth, the wavelength, and the skin’s response.

Pico systems may be considered for selected sun spots, melasma, post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation, uneven tone, or tattoos. A portable device may have fewer wavelengths and less control than a professional platform. Dark patches can have many causes, so treating an undiagnosed mark can delay the right care or make pigmentation more noticeable.

Get a diagnosis before treating a new, changing, bleeding, or irregularly coloured spot. Avoid using the device on irritated, infected, sunburned, or recently tanned skin, and follow instructions for patch testing, eye protection, and aftercare. Do not pass the laser over moles, tattoos you are not treating, or areas with open skin.

After treatment, keep the area clean, use the recommended bland moisturizer, and protect it from sunlight. Pause irritating products if advised. IPL photofacial and laser toning are different approaches; a clinician can explain which target and skin pattern each is designed to address.

Contact a clinician for severe or worsening pain, blistering, pus, spreading redness, facial swelling, or a persistent white or dark patch. Seek urgent care for breathing difficulty or direct eye exposure with visual symptoms. A pigmented lesion that changes in size, shape, colour, or symptoms needs examination rather than repeat cosmetic treatment.

Ask what is causing the pigmentation, whether your skin is prone to post-inflammatory darkening, which wavelength and settings are appropriate, and what alternatives exist. Ask how many sessions might be considered, how to manage recurrence, and what symptoms mean the treatment should stop.
