What should you know about portable Nd:YAG lasers?

Nd:YAG commonly refers to a 1064-nanometre laser. Its light can reach deeper targets than some shorter-wavelength systems, where it is absorbed by pigment in hair or by selected blood-containing structures. The same depth means an unsuitable setting can heat surrounding tissue and cause burns or changes in pigmentation.

A portable label does not establish that a device is appropriate for home use. Professional systems may be used for laser hair removal, vascular concerns, or selected nail problems, but the diagnosis and device settings differ for each purpose. A dark mark should not be treated merely because it looks like a pigment target.

Have the target identified before treatment and follow the manufacturer’s eye-protection and skin-preparation instructions. Do not aim a laser at eyes, reflective surfaces, tattoos, moles, suspicious lesions, or broken or infected skin. Avoid treating recently tanned or sunburned skin, and tell the clinician about medicines that increase light sensitivity or a history of poor wound healing.

Do not improvise settings or use a device intended for a different target. A trained practitioner can decide whether Nd:YAG, another laser, or a non-laser approach is more suitable. For hair concerns, the plan may differ from treatment for nail fungus.

Stop and seek prompt medical advice for severe pain, blistering, charring, rapidly worsening swelling, vision change, or a spreading burn. Urgent care is needed after direct eye exposure or sudden visual symptoms. Arrange review for persistent light or dark patches, drainage, increasing warmth, or worsening nail pain after treatment.

Ask what diagnosis is being treated, why Nd:YAG is being selected, what eye protection and cooling will be used, and how your skin tone or tanning history affects the settings. Ask what recovery changes are expected and who to contact if the treated area becomes painful or blistered.
