What should you know about portable microdermabrasion machines?

A handpiece moves across the skin while a rough tip or fine crystals loosen surface cells and suction removes debris. The treatment is superficial, so it may make skin feel smoother and temporarily improve the look of dull texture. It does not remove deep scars, active infection, or the underlying cause of persistent acne or pigmentation.

Home machines vary in suction strength, tip texture, and cleaning requirements. Too much pressure, repeated passes, or use over inflamed skin can cause tiny abrasions, irritation, or a flare of discoloration, especially in skin that marks easily.

Start with the manufacturer’s gentle setting and a small test area. Clean and dry the skin, keep the handpiece moving, and avoid eyelids, lips, broken skin, active spots, cold sores, and raised or suspicious marks. Clean the tip exactly as instructed and do not share it without proper disinfection.

Afterward, use a bland moisturizer and protect the treated area from sunlight. Avoid stacking the procedure with strong exfoliating products, retinoids, or waxing until the skin has recovered. A chemical peel is a different exfoliating treatment and should not be combined casually with home abrasion.

Stop treatment if there is sharp pain, bleeding, intense stinging, or rapidly increasing redness. Seek medical care for blisters, facial swelling, pus, fever, spreading warmth, or a dark or pale patch that persists. Have persistent acne, unexplained texture change, or a changing mole assessed before using a device over the area.

Ask whether your current acne, eczema, rosacea, cold sores, medication, or tendency to develop dark marks makes microdermabrasion unsuitable. You can also ask which areas and settings are reasonable, how long to pause active products, and whether a supervised procedure would better match your skin goal.
