A microdermabrasion device exfoliates the outer skin surface with a moving tip and may use suction to lift loosened cells.

Common systems use a diamond-coated tip or a stream of fine crystals. The handpiece is moved across selected areas in controlled passes. This is a surface treatment, not a device designed to reach deep tissue.

The clinician cleans the skin, chooses an appropriate tip and suction level, then guides the handpiece over the treatment area. Sensitive zones, active lesions, and thin skin may need to be avoided. The skin is checked during the appointment so pressure and passes can be adjusted.

Afterward, the clinician may apply a calming product and give instructions about cleansing, moisturising, and sun protection. The device is used as part of Microdermabrasion, and the plan is adapted to skin sensitivity and the concern being treated.

Microdermabrasion works mainly at the surface. It may improve the feel and appearance of rough outer skin, but it cannot remove a suspicious lesion, correct deep scarring in one session, or treat every cause of pigmentation. Temporary redness, tightness, or sensitivity can occur, and the response varies with skin type and treatment settings.

A clinician may recommend a different approach when the skin barrier is inflamed, the concern is deep, or diagnosis is uncertain. Ask how the proposed endpoint will be assessed rather than assuming stronger suction will produce a better result.

Depending on the concern, alternatives may include a gentle home exfoliation plan, prescription treatment, chemical exfoliation, or a procedure aimed at deeper remodelling. The choice depends on skin sensitivity, active inflammation, pigment tendency, and the area being treated. A consultation should match the method to the problem rather than to the device name.

Expect a treatment that feels like repeated polishing or light suction across the skin. You may look flushed immediately afterward, so plan skincare and sun exposure carefully according to the clinic's instructions. Do not schedule treatment over sunburn, open wounds, or an active infection.

Tell the clinician about recent peels, waxing, injections, acne medicines, eczema, cold sores, and any tendency to develop dark marks after irritation. These details can change whether the device is suitable and how gently it should be used.

A trained professional should inspect the skin and use clean, appropriately maintained equipment. Contact the clinic if redness worsens, swelling is pronounced, crusting develops, or pain persists beyond the expected recovery period. Use the recommended moisturiser and broad sun protection, and avoid picking or adding strong exfoliants until the skin has settled.
