What should you know about popcorn cell lymphoma?

The nickname refers to the folded or lobulated shape of certain abnormal B lymphocytes under a microscope. These cells are classically associated with a form of Hodgkin lymphoma called nodular lymphocyte-predominant Hodgkin lymphoma, although the diagnosis requires the surrounding tissue pattern and special marker results.

Lymphoma can affect lymph nodes or other tissues. Night sweats, fever, itching, tiredness, or a growing painless lump may occur, but these symptoms have many possible causes. A PET-CT scan helps the team map active areas and assess the stage; it does not replace tissue diagnosis.

Ask for a clear explanation of the biopsy diagnosis, marker results, and stage. Treatment choices depend on the amount and location of lymphoma, previous treatment, symptoms, and your general health. Options may include observation for selected slow-changing disease, radiotherapy for a focused area, chemotherapy, or immunotherapy.

If lymphoma returns or does not respond as expected, the team may discuss cellular treatments such as CAR T-cell therapy or an autologous stem cell transplant in appropriate circumstances. Keep a record of fevers, sweats, weight change, new lumps, and medicines, and bring it to appointments.

Seek urgent help for difficulty breathing or swallowing, rapidly increasing neck or chest swelling, fainting, confusion, severe weakness, or a fever during cancer treatment. Call promptly for chills, persistent vomiting, new neurological symptoms, or signs of infection after a procedure or immune treatment.
