What should you know about polymethyl methacrylate bone cement?

Short answer

Polymethyl methacrylate bone cement is a synthetic material used to anchor some implants or support a treated vertebra during orthopaedic procedures.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

At a glance

Material
Synthetic polymethyl methacrylate
Uses
Implant fixation or vertebral support
Decision factors
Bone quality, anatomy and procedure

What it means

This material is mixed during an operation and placed where the surgeon needs fixation or structural support. In joint replacement, it can fill the space between an implant and prepared bone. In procedures such as [Kyphoplasty](/treatments/spine-care/kyphoplasty/) or [Vertebroplasty](/treatments/spine-care/vertebroplasty/), it may be delivered into a fractured vertebra to provide internal support. It is not a bone-healing medicine and it does not replace the need for careful diagnosis, surgical planning or follow-up.

What to do next

Ask your surgeon why cement is recommended, where it will be placed, and what alternatives apply to your bone quality and procedure. Tell the team about allergies, previous operations, medicines and heart or lung conditions. After [Total Hip Replacement](/treatments/joint-replacement/total-hip-replacement/) or [Total Knee Replacement](/treatments/joint-replacement/total-knee-replacement/), follow the plan for wound care, walking, exercises and review appointments. Recovery depends on the operation and your overall health, not on the cement alone.

When to seek care

After a procedure, seek prompt advice for worsening pain, fever, wound drainage, new swelling, shortness of breath, chest pain, or new weakness or numbness. Sudden breathing difficulty or fainting needs emergency care. Contact the surgical team if pain returns after an initial improvement or if the treated limb or spine becomes harder to use.

Questions for your doctor

What is the purpose of cement in my procedure? How will you check its position? What symptoms should prompt urgent review? Which activities are safe during healing?

Questions people ask

Does bone cement replace bone?

No. It provides fixation or support in a planned location; the surrounding bone and the operation still determine healing and function.

Is cement used in every joint replacement?

No. The choice depends on the implant, bone characteristics, joint and surgeon’s plan.
