What should you know about a pocket-size ECG machine?

Sensors detect electrical signals during the recording and display them as a tracing. A brief recording may capture an irregular rhythm occurring at that moment, but intermittent symptoms can happen outside the recording. Movement, loose contact, sweat, or incorrect placement can create artefacts that look concerning.

An ECG can support assessment of palpitations, fast or slow pulse, chest discomfort, or fainting. It does not measure every cause of these symptoms, and an app label should not be treated as a final diagnosis.

Follow the device instructions, remain still, and keep the contacts clean. Save the tracing with the time, symptoms, activity, and pulse if shown. Bring it to a clinician rather than changing medicines based on the screen.

Call emergency services for chest pressure, severe breathlessness, collapse, new weakness, confusion, or palpitations with fainting. Seek urgent assessment for a sustained very fast or irregular heartbeat with feeling unwell, even if a portable tracing appears reassuring.

Ask what the tracing means in relation to your symptoms, whether the recording quality is adequate, and whether a longer monitor or additional assessment would be useful.
