What should you know about PMR myalgia?

Short answer
PMR myalgia means muscle aches or soreness; the cause may be temporary, medication-related, infectious, or linked to an inflammatory condition.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.
At a glance
- Medical term
- Myalgia means muscle pain or aching.
- Useful detail
- Record where the pain is, when it began, and what makes it better or worse.
- Urgent warning
- New weakness, breathing difficulty, confusion, or dark urine needs prompt care.
The short answer
Myalgia can affect one muscle, several areas, or much of the body. It may feel like tenderness, cramping, heaviness, burning, or pain when you move or press the area. The word describes a symptom rather than a single diagnosis.
What muscle aches can mean
Aches after unfamiliar exercise, lifting, prolonged posture, or a minor strain often settle as the muscle recovers. Viral illnesses such as influenza or COVID-19 can cause widespread aching alongside fever, tiredness, cough, sore throat, or other symptoms. Dengue fever, malaria, and brucellosis may also involve body aches, particularly after relevant travel or exposure, so tell a clinician where you have been and when symptoms began.
Other explanations include fibromyalgia, an underactive thyroid, inflammatory muscle disease, dehydration, or an effect of a prescribed or non-prescribed medicine. Polymyalgia rheumatica, often shortened to PMR, is a separate inflammatory condition that typically causes marked aching and stiffness around the shoulders, neck, and hips, especially after rest. It needs medical assessment rather than self-diagnosis.
What you can do now
For mild aches that follow activity, reduce the aggravating activity briefly, keep gently mobile, drink fluids, and use a warm shower or compress if it helps. Avoid returning suddenly to intense exercise while movement remains painful. Note the location, timing, severity, recent activity, travel, illness symptoms, and any new medicine or dose change.
Arrange a primary-care appointment if the pain is widespread, keeps returning, lasts beyond a short recovery period, or comes with morning stiffness, weakness, weight change, a rash, fever, or unusual tiredness. A clinician may examine your strength and joints, review medicines and exposures, and decide whether blood tests or other checks are appropriate. Do not stop a prescribed medicine without advice.
When to seek urgent care
Seek urgent medical help for severe or rapidly worsening muscle pain, new weakness that makes walking or lifting difficult, confusion, fainting, trouble breathing, chest pain, a stiff neck with fever, or very dark urine. These signs can accompany problems affecting muscles, nerves, infection, or other organs.
Get prompt advice after intense exertion if muscle pain is out of proportion to the activity, swelling is significant, or urine becomes tea-coloured. If you have new shoulder and hip stiffness with a new headache, jaw pain when chewing, scalp tenderness, or visual symptoms, seek same-day assessment because an inflammatory illness may need treatment quickly.
Questions for your doctor
Ask: What pattern of pain or stiffness should we investigate? Could any medicine, recent infection, travel, exercise, or thyroid problem be contributing? Do I have true muscle weakness or pain-limited movement? Which symptoms should make me seek urgent help, and when should we review this if it does not improve?

Questions people ask
Is PMR the same as myalgia?
No. Myalgia is a general term for muscle pain, while polymyalgia rheumatica is a specific inflammatory condition with characteristic shoulder, neck, and hip aching and stiffness.
Can an infection cause muscle aches?
Yes. Influenza, COVID-19, and other infections can produce body aches, usually with additional symptoms such as fever, tiredness, or respiratory or stomach symptoms.
When should muscle aches be checked?
Arrange an assessment when aches are persistent, widespread, recurrent, associated with weakness or systemic symptoms, or unexplained by recent activity.
