Plastic surgery for a forehead scar: what to know

A forehead scar may be flat, indented, raised, widened, itchy, tight or differently coloured. Its direction can affect how visible it is during facial movement. The clinician checks whether it is fully healed, how it sits relative to natural skin lines, and whether hair follicles, nerves or muscle movement are involved.

Scar revision removes or rearranges some scar tissue and closes the line with attention to tension. A skin graft may cover a larger tissue defect, although the graft and donor site both leave marks. Fractional laser treatment can sometimes improve texture or stiffness after healing; it does not replace assessment of a suspicious or changing lesion.

Bring photographs showing how the scar developed, details of earlier operations or injuries, and a list of medicines. Tell the clinician if you form raised scars, have active skin disease, or use products that affect healing. Protect the area from sunlight and follow wound-care instructions. Scar improvement is gradual, so agree on a realistic goal such as softer texture, better alignment or less tightness.

Have a forehead mark examined if it grows, bleeds, crusts repeatedly, changes colour, becomes painful or develops a new lump. After a procedure, contact the team for spreading redness, increasing warmth, pus, fever, wound separation or sudden swelling. New weakness of the forehead or eyelid, severe headache or vision change needs urgent assessment.
