A practitioner cleans the skin, applies numbing medicine when appropriate, and moves a microneedling pen across selected areas. The needles create channels at a chosen depth; the resulting healing response can gradually soften the look of some acne scars, uneven texture, enlarged pores, and fine lines. It is not the same as a laser, and the device setting, needle depth, area treated, and your tendency to develop dark marks all affect the plan. People with active infection, inflamed acne, or certain healing problems may need to postpone treatment.

Before treatment, disclose medicines, cold-sore history, recent tanning, active skin disease, and any tendency toward raised scars or pigmentation. Follow instructions about retinoids and irritating products. Afterward, expect temporary redness, sensitivity, warmth, or pinpoint swelling. Use the recommended bland cleanser and moisturizer, protect the area from sun, and avoid picking, vigorous exercise, swimming, and irritating products until the skin has settled. Your clinician can compare microneedling with fractional laser or RF microneedling when heat, depth, or downtime would change the choice.

Contact the treating clinic if redness worsens instead of easing, pain becomes pronounced, blisters appear, or the skin develops spreading warmth, pus, or marked swelling. Seek urgent help for breathing difficulty or swelling of the lips and face. New or worsening darkening should also be reported early, especially if you have a history of melasma.
