Can pink eye occur without redness?

Conjunctivitis affects the thin surface covering the eye, but redness can be subtle, uneven, or difficult to see in some lighting or skin tones. Watery eyes, sticky discharge, gritty sensation, or itching may appear before redness or without much redness. Dry eye, allergy, blocked tear drainage, eyelid inflammation, and exposure to dust or smoke can cause similar symptoms. Light sensitivity, significant pain, or vision change is less typical of simple surface irritation and deserves assessment.

Avoid rubbing the eye and wash hands before applying any drops or cleaning discharge. Use clean water and a fresh cloth, do not share towels or cosmetics, and stop contact lenses while the eye feels irritated. A cool compress or suitable lubricating drops may provide comfort. Because redness is not required for every eye problem, avoid borrowing antibiotic drops; a clinician should decide whether antibiotic treatment fits the symptoms.

Arrange a GP consultation if discharge or irritation persists, returns repeatedly, or affects one eye after an injury or exposure. Seek urgent eye care for pain, strong light sensitivity, reduced or blurred vision, a chemical splash, a foreign body, or swelling around the eye. Contact-lens wearers should obtain prompt advice for pain, discharge, or any vision change, even when redness is limited.

Ask whether the pattern fits conjunctivitis, allergy, dryness, or eyelid irritation; which drops are safe; and how long to avoid lenses. Tell the clinician about discharge, itching, light sensitivity, pain, recent illness, allergies, and eye exposures.
