What can happen if pink eye is untreated?

The effect of leaving pink eye untreated depends on the cause. Mild viral or irritant conjunctivitis may gradually improve, while allergic symptoms can continue whenever the trigger is present. Bacterial infection may produce ongoing discharge and spread to the other eye or to close contacts. A red or watery eye can also reflect a problem deeper than conjunctivitis, especially when pain, light sensitivity, or vision change is present. Lack of treatment does not prove that a condition is harmless, and antibiotics are not useful for every type.

Wash hands before and after eye care, clean discharge with a fresh damp cloth, and avoid rubbing. Use separate towels and pillowcases, do not share cosmetics or eye drops, and pause contact lenses. Keep hands away from the applicator tip of any prescribed drop. A GP consultation can clarify whether observation, allergy treatment, or antibiotic treatment is appropriate. Do not use someone else’s medicine.

Arrange medical review when symptoms are not improving, are worsening, or interfere with daily activities. Seek urgent eye care for strong pain, light sensitivity, reduced vision, a foreign body or chemical injury, marked swelling, or symptoms in a contact-lens wearer. Prompt assessment is also sensible when a newborn, someone with reduced immunity, or a person recovering from eye surgery is affected.

Ask how long observation is reasonable, which symptoms would change the plan, whether the eye is contagious, and when you can safely use lenses or cosmetics again. Describe the discharge, itching, pain, vision, and any recent exposure.
