What does pink eye look like?

The redness may affect one eye first or appear in both. Tears can be clear and watery, while thicker discharge can make the eyelids stick together after sleep. The eye may feel sandy or itchy, and the skin around it can become sore from wiping.

Appearance alone cannot identify the cause. Viral, bacterial, allergic, and irritant problems can overlap, and a red eye can also come from conditions outside the conjunctiva. Severe pain, light sensitivity, or vision change is not typical mild irritation.

Gently clean discharge with clean water and a fresh cotton pad or clean cloth for each wipe. Wash hands often, avoid rubbing the eyes, and do not share towels, cosmetics, or pillowcases. Pause eye makeup and contact lenses until symptoms have settled and a clinician advises that restarting is appropriate.

A pharmacist or GP can help decide whether supportive care is enough. Antibiotics do not treat viral or allergic causes, so do not use leftover medicine without advice.

Seek prompt care for significant pain, reduced vision, strong light sensitivity, a cloudy cornea, marked swelling, or symptoms after an injury or chemical splash. Contact-lens wear with a painful or very red eye needs urgent eye assessment. A GP consultation can help when discharge persists, symptoms worsen, or the diagnosis is unclear.

Ask what may be causing the appearance, how to prevent spread at home, whether you should stay away from work or school, and whether any prescribed drops are suitable with contact lenses.
