What should you know about pink eye with cold symptoms?

A cold may bring a blocked or runny nose, cough or sore throat at the same time as watery, red or gritty eyes. Viral conjunctivitis can accompany this pattern and may spread from one eye to the other. Bacterial conjunctivitis can also cause discharge, so cold symptoms do not identify the eye cause by themselves. Allergy and irritation remain possible explanations when there is no infectious illness.

Rest, drink fluids as tolerated, and clean eye discharge with a fresh damp pad. Wash hands after coughing, blowing your nose or touching your eyes. Do not share towels, pillows, tissues, eye makeup or contact-lens items. Avoid rubbing the eyes, and pause contact lenses until symptoms have cleared and a clinician confirms it is appropriate to resume them. Antibiotics do not treat a viral cold; a GP consultation can help if the eye symptoms are difficult to interpret.

Seek prompt care for eye pain, light sensitivity, blurred or reduced vision, marked swelling, an eye injury or symptoms in a contact-lens wearer. Get urgent help for sudden vision change or severe pain. Arrange review if discharge becomes heavy, symptoms worsen instead of settling, or the cold improves while the eye problem continues.
