What should you know about pink eye care?

Conjunctivitis is inflammation of the thin surface covering the white of the eye and inner eyelid. It can cause redness, watering, gritty discomfort and discharge. The trigger may be infectious, allergic or irritant, and those causes do not all need the same treatment. Eye discharge may be watery or sticky, and the pattern can change as the problem settles. A red eye should be considered alongside pain, vision and sensitivity to light.

Wash hands often, especially before and after cleaning the eye. Use a clean damp pad to wipe from the inner corner outward, then discard it. Use separate towels and pillowcases, avoid sharing eye makeup, and wash reusable items that touch the face. Do not rub the eye. Pause contact lenses and eye makeup while symptoms continue. A cool clean compress may soothe irritation. A clinician can advise whether antibiotic treatment has a role; do not start old or borrowed drops.

Get prompt assessment for eye pain, light sensitivity, blurred vision, pronounced swelling, injury, or redness in a contact-lens wearer. Sudden vision change or severe pain requires urgent help. Arrange a GP consultation when discharge is persistent, symptoms are worsening, both eyes become increasingly affected, or the problem keeps returning.
