Pink bleeding after sex: what should you know?

A small amount of pink blood may appear when vaginal or cervical tissue is irritated. Dryness, hormonal changes, and a delicate cervix can contribute. Infections such as Chlamydia may cause bleeding after sex, particularly with pelvic discomfort or unusual discharge.

Cervical Dysplasia and Cervical Cancer can also present with bleeding after sex, although the symptom has many non-cancerous explanations. After menopause, Genitourinary Syndrome of Menopause can make tissue thinner and more prone to irritation. Vaginal Cancer is another uncommon cause that a clinician may consider when symptoms persist.

Arrange a medical review if the bleeding happens again, occurs without sex, or comes with pain, discharge, odour, or a change in your periods. Record the timing, amount, colour, contraception, pregnancy possibility, and any new products or medicines. Avoid sex until significant pain or bleeding settles, and do not douche.

An assessment may include a pregnancy test, infection testing, and an examination of the vagina and cervix. If a cervical sample needs further investigation, your clinician may explain whether a Cone Biopsy is appropriate.

Seek urgent care for heavy bleeding, severe pelvic or abdominal pain, fainting, marked dizziness, fever, or bleeding during pregnancy. Prompt review is also needed after menopause if you have any vaginal bleeding.

Ask what may be irritating the tissue, whether you need infection or pregnancy testing, and whether your cervical screening is up to date. If bleeding continues, ask which examination or biopsy would clarify the cause and when to return.
