Pimples under the earlobe: what to know

Oil, hair products, headphones, masks, and jewellery can rub or transfer residue to the skin beneath the ear. Acne can produce a tender or blocked pore, while folliculitis tends to centre on a hair. A firm, rounded lump that stays under the skin may not be a pimple at all. Recent piercing raises the possibility of local irritation or infection, especially if the jewellery site is sore, hot, swollen, or draining.

Notice whether the bump is on the skin surface or deeper, whether it moves, and whether it changes after removing an irritant. The pattern helps a clinician choose the right care.

Clean gently, dry the area, and keep hair products away from the fold. Avoid squeezing, piercing, or repeatedly touching the bump. Remove jewellery only with appropriate professional advice if a fresh piercing is involved, and avoid changing jewellery while tissue is inflamed without guidance. Clean headphones and mask straps that contact the area. If the lump persists or returns, arrange an examination rather than treating it as acne indefinitely.

Seek prompt advice for spreading redness, warmth, worsening pain, pus, fever, or swelling extending toward the face. Arrange assessment for a firm lump that enlarges, repeatedly drains, affects hearing, follows a piercing, or does not heal. Urgent care is appropriate for rapid facial swelling or feeling faint or unwell.

Ask whether the bump is acne, folliculitis, irritation, or a cyst-like lesion. Ask whether jewellery should stay in place, how to clean the area, whether drainage needs testing, and what changes should trigger urgent review.
