Pimples under the breast: what to know

Skin under the breast can stay warm and damp, especially after exercise or in hot weather. Rubbing from clothing may inflame hair follicles or create chafing, while occlusive products can block pores. Folliculitis often appears as small bumps centred on hairs. Acne can occur there too, but a recurring deep, painful lump is not the same as a simple surface spot. Itching, scaling, a spreading rash, or a strong odour may suggest irritation or another skin problem.

Note whether bumps are on the fold or breast skin, whether they recur in the same place, and whether they drain. A clinician can match the pattern to the right treatment.

Rinse gently, dry the fold carefully, and change out of sweaty clothing. Choose a supportive, breathable bra that does not rub, and avoid picking or squeezing. Pause fragranced creams and harsh scrubs on irritated skin. Do not apply steroid or antibiotic products without advice, because the wrong product can aggravate some rashes. If bumps persist or return, arrange a skin review; repeated moisture and friction may need a prevention plan.

Seek prompt medical advice if redness spreads, the skin becomes hot and swollen, pain increases, pus collects, or fever develops. Arrange assessment for a deep lump, repeated drainage, an open sore, a change in the breast or nipple, or a mark that does not heal. Urgent review is sensible when swelling progresses quickly or you feel unwell.

Ask whether this is folliculitis, acne, chafing, or a fold rash. Ask how to keep the area dry, which fabrics or products to avoid, whether drainage should be tested, and how to reduce recurrences.
