Pimples under the armpit: what to know

The armpit is warm, moist, and exposed to rubbing from skin and clothing. Shaving or waxing can inflame follicles, while deodorant, sweat, and tight garments may add irritation. Folliculitis presents as small bumps around hairs; acne can also affect the area. A deeper tender lump differs from a surface spot and may need examination, particularly if it returns or scars. The symptom alone does not identify one cause.

Record whether bumps follow hair removal, affect both sides, or drain. A clinician can assess the pattern and distinguish folliculitis, acne, an ingrown hair, or deeper inflammation.

Clean gently and pat the area dry. Wear breathable clothing, reduce rubbing, and stop shaving directly over active bumps until the skin calms. Do not squeeze or lance a lump, because this can worsen inflammation or spread infection. Avoid fragranced products on broken skin. If the problem returns, arrange a review instead of repeatedly changing deodorants or using strong acne products; armpit skin can irritate easily.

Seek prompt care for spreading redness, increasing warmth, severe pain, fever, or feeling unwell. Arrange an appointment for a deep lump that returns, drains, limits arm movement, or does not settle. Persistent one-sided swelling should be assessed rather than assumed to be a pimple. Urgent review is appropriate for marked swelling or red streaking.

Ask whether the bumps are folliculitis, acne, an ingrown hair, or something deeper. Ask if you should change shaving technique or deodorant, whether a swab is needed for drainage, and what recurrence-prevention plan fits your skin.
