Treatment for pimples on the head or scalp

Acne and folliculitis can look alike but may need different approaches. Folliculitis presents around hair follicles and may follow sweat, friction, shaving, or occlusive products. A dermatologist may ask about hair products, washing, headwear, itching, pain, drainage, and hair loss. A persistent lump or scaly, crusted area should not be treated repeatedly as a pimple without examination.

Start with gentle washing, clean headwear and pillowcases, and a pause from greasy styling products or close shaving. Depending on the findings, a clinician may recommend a topical acne medicine, an antimicrobial or anti-inflammatory scalp treatment, or another prescription approach. Follow directions carefully because facial and scalp products are not automatically safe near the eyes or on broken skin. LED light therapy may be discussed as an adjunct for selected acne concerns, but it is not a substitute for diagnosis.

Arrange dermatology care when bumps are deep, painful, draining, recurrent, spreading, or associated with scarring or hair loss. Seek prompt attention for fever, rapidly spreading redness, major swelling, or severe pain. Stop a product and seek advice if it causes intense burning, swelling, or a blistering reaction.
