Pimples on the head or scalp: what to know

Acne can form where oil and dead skin block follicles, while folliculitis commonly causes clusters of red or pus-filled bumps centred on hairs. Sweat, helmets, hats, dandruff-related irritation, and oily styling products can contribute. Scratching may break the skin and allow further irritation. A painful lump, crusting patch, or area of hair loss is not typical of a simple isolated pimple and deserves an examination.

Wash after heavy sweating, rinse shampoo thoroughly, and keep combs, hats, and pillowcases clean. Avoid picking, tight headwear, greasy pomades, and applying facial products broadly through the hair. Use a gentle shampoo unless a clinician has recommended a medicated one. A dermatologist can distinguish acne from folliculitis and tailor treatment without unnecessarily irritating the scalp.

Seek a review if bumps recur, spread, drain, become deeply painful, cause crusting or hair loss, or remain despite careful cleansing. Get prompt medical attention for fever, rapidly spreading redness, marked swelling, or severe pain.
