Pimples on the bum

The buttocks are exposed to pressure, rubbing, sweat, and prolonged contact with clothing. Folliculitis often appears as small red or pus-filled bumps around hairs. Ingrown hairs can be itchy or tender after shaving or waxing. Deeper, repeatedly painful lumps that drain may represent a different inflammatory condition and should be examined. Facial acne can affect the buttocks, but many cases are follicle irritation rather than classic acne.

Shower after sweating, change damp clothing promptly, and choose breathable underwear and loose clothing. Reduce rubbing during exercise and take breaks from prolonged sitting when possible. Wash gently and avoid scrubbing, picking, or squeezing. Pause waxing or close shaving during a flare. A clinician can recommend treatment based on whether the bumps are inflamed follicles, acne, or another condition.

Arrange a review for large or deep painful bumps, repeated drainage, scarring, spreading redness, or lesions that keep returning. Seek prompt care for fever, rapidly worsening swelling, severe pain, or feeling unwell. A persistent rash with marked itch may need a different diagnosis and treatment than pimples.
