Pimples from shaving your face: what to know

Small bumps appearing along the shaved area soon after hair removal may reflect irritation or razor bumps. A central hair, itch and repeated occurrence at the same sites support an ingrown-hair pattern. Pus, crusting or tenderness around hairs can occur with folliculitis. Blackheads, whiteheads and spots outside the shaved zone suggest acne may also be present. Burning around the mouth or persistent flushing points toward other facial conditions.

Give irritated skin a break from shaving. Wash gently, pat dry and apply an unperfumed moisturiser. Avoid shaving foam that stings, abrasive brushes, strong acids and picking. For the next shave, soften the hair first, use a lubricating gel, take a single light pass in the direction of growth, and avoid stretching the skin. Clean the razor and do not share it. Seek assessment for persistent or recurring facial bumps, painful nodules, pus, scarring, or colour changes that continue after shaving stops. Get prompt care if redness spreads quickly, the face becomes markedly swollen, pain is severe, or fever develops. Mention any new beard oil, cleanser, sunscreen or aftershave, since product irritation can add to shaving trauma.
