Pimples from razor burn: what to know

Razor burn usually feels raw, stings or itches soon after shaving. Ingrown hairs can produce raised bumps when cut hairs curl back into the skin; this is often called razor bumps. Folliculitis can look similar but may include pus-filled spots around several follicles. Acne, hormonal acne, perioral dermatitis and rosacea can also cause facial bumps, so timing and distribution help separate them.

Stop shaving the irritated skin until it settles. Rinse gently, apply a cool clean compress and use a plain moisturiser if it does not sting. Avoid alcohol-based aftershave, fragranced products, vigorous exfoliation and picking. When you resume, soften hair with warm water, use shaving gel, move in the direction of growth with light pressure, and rinse the blade between strokes. A clean, sharp razor and less-close technique can reduce friction; a clinician can advise on persistent bumps.

Arrange a review when bumps recur after careful shaving, remain painful, form draining spots, leave dark marks or scars, or spread beyond shaved areas. Seek prompt care for rapidly expanding redness, severe tenderness, facial swelling or fever.
