Pimples and cysts: what they may mean

Cyst-like acne lesions can feel firm or soft, sit deep in the skin, and remain painful even when there is no visible head. They may occur alongside blackheads, whiteheads and smaller pimples. A boil, inflamed follicle or other skin lump can look similar, so appearance alone cannot confirm the cause. Hormonal changes, friction and products may influence acne patterns, while folliculitis is centred on hair follicles and can itch. A dermatologist can examine the lesion and decide whether it is acne or another condition.

Use a warm, clean compress for comfort, cleanse without rubbing, and avoid needles, squeezing or repeated touching. Keep helmets, straps and tight collars clean if they rub the area.
