Short answer

Picosure toning uses repeated low-intensity picosecond laser passes for selected tone concerns, after a clinician checks the cause and skin type.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

At a glance

Approach
Repeated passes may be used for gradual pigment blending.
Before treatment
The cause of uneven tone should be assessed first.
Aftercare
Gentle skincare and sun protection support healing.

What toning usually describes

In this context, toning describes a treatment approach that makes multiple passes over an area to address selected pigment or uneven tone. It is not a diagnosis and does not make every dark patch suitable for laser. Melasma, post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation, sun spots, and other causes can behave differently.

The aim is usually gradual blending of colour rather than a change that appears immediately. The clinician selects the wavelength and energy, watches the skin response, and balances pigment targeting with the risk of irritation. How to approach a toning appointment

Bring a list of skincare products and medicines, and mention recent sun exposure, waxing, peels, acne, eczema, or earlier pigment treatments. Use only the preparation advised by the clinic. During healing, be gentle with the area, avoid picking, and use broad sun protection because inflammation and sunlight can deepen colour.

Ask whether the concern could be [Melasma](/conditions/melasma/) or [Post-Inflammatory Hyperpigmentation](/conditions/post-inflammatory-hyperpigmentation/), and whether Laser Toning or IPL Photofacial is a more appropriate alternative for the diagnosis.

When to seek care

Contact the clinic if redness spreads, pain increases, swelling becomes pronounced, or the area develops blisters, drainage, or worsening warmth. Seek urgent help for eye symptoms or breathing difficulty. If pigmentation becomes darker or lighter and does not begin settling as expected, arrange a review before another session.

Questions for your doctor

Ask what diagnosis is being treated, why toning is preferred, how many visits may be considered, what the normal response looks like, how relapse or darkening will be managed, and which daily skincare and sun-protection steps matter most.

Questions people ask

Is Picosure toning suitable for all melasma?

No. Melasma can be sensitive to irritation and may need a broader management plan than laser alone.

Will toning change my skin tone immediately?

Usually the intended change is gradual, and the visible response varies with the diagnosis and skin reaction.
