Pico laser side effects: what to know

Brief laser pulses still create a deliberate effect in the skin. Mild warmth, redness, swelling, or sensitivity may appear soon after treatment, followed by dryness or small crusts as the surface settles. Pigment can temporarily become darker or lighter, especially when the treated concern is melasma or post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation. Less expected reactions include blistering, infection, prolonged inflammation, or a colour change that does not settle. Risk depends on the device settings, treatment area, skin tone, sun exposure, and personal healing history.

Follow the clinic's instructions for cooling, cleansing, moisturising, and sun protection. Do not scratch, scrub, peel, or apply strong acids and retinoids until advised. Avoid tanning while the skin is recovering. Tell the clinician before treatment about active infection, eczema, cold sores, recent tanning, medicines, and any previous reaction to light-based treatment. If the goal is uneven tone or dark patches, confirm whether Pico laser, IPL Photofacial, or Laser Toning is the most suitable option.

Call the treating clinic when pain is worsening, redness is spreading, swelling is marked, blisters appear, or the skin becomes hot and produces fluid. Seek urgent help for trouble breathing, facial swelling affecting the airway, or a severe allergic reaction. Arrange review for persistent pigment change or delayed healing.
